Questions?

478-445-4018

David Muschell,

Director

Below, you will find answers to some of the most frequently asked questions about the B.A. in English/Creative Writing at GCSU.

What are the criteria for admission to the program?

Students who wish to major in English/Creative Writing must meet GCSU’s regular admission criteria for new students or transfer students.

When should I apply?

GCSU’s enrollments are growing (about 5,500 students in 2003-2004) so you should try to apply as early as possible in the year before you plan to attend, especially if you hope to qualify for financial aid.  Top high school seniors typically apply in the fall.

What kind of writing can I study?

We offer introductory courses (Intro to Creative Writing, Intermediate Creative Writing) that expose students to more than one genre, and we offer single-genre workshops at the 4000-level in poetry, fiction, scriptwriting, creative nonfiction, and poetry translation.  At GCSU, we encourage our students to write in more than one genre.

When can I start taking courses in my major?

Almost right away.  Students should take English 1101 and 1102 first, but many of our best students are able to start with 1102 in their first semester and then take English 2208, Intro to Creative Writing, their second semester.

What about other prerequisites?

All creative writing students take 2208 first, and then English 3008, Intermediate Creative Writing, which is the prerequisite for the 4000-level workshops.  Students usually take English 4031, Creative Writing Seminar, in the spring of their senior year.

So, what are the major requirements?

In Area F, students take their 2000-level requirements: Introduction to Creative Writing, American Literature, Shakespeare, Writing About Literature, British Literature I or II, and a modern foreign language 2002-level class.  Students take 24 hours (8 courses) in major requirements at the 4000-level, including four courses in literature and related courses, and four creative writing courses (Intermediate Creative Writing, two 4000-level workshops, and Creative Writing Seminar).  Most students will have ample elective opportunities and can take additional writing and literature courses, or they may pursue a minor or a second major.

What is the Senior Capstone Experience?

All majors at GCSU feature a senior project of some kind, designed to enhance students’ classroom experiences.  In the English/Creative Writing major, some students participate in a summer study abroad program and then work on a creative project (novella, collection of poems, play, or other substantial work of writing) based on that experience.  Students who do not study abroad design a project with a faculty advisor and, in the fall, work on research and writing related to that project.  Spring semester, students take English 4031, Creative Writing Seminar, in which all senior capstone projects are discussed in a workshop setting and completed under the guidance of the seminar instructor.

How do I get involved with The Peacock’s Feet?

You can submit to The Peacock’s Feet (GCSU’s student-edited art and literary magazine) your first semester on campus.  If you take English 2208 in the spring of your first year, you can apply then to be on the editorial staff (students should take Intro to Creative Writing before applying to be on The Peacock’s Feet staff).  The editors also sponsor the Red Earth Reading Series, which is open to all creative writing students.

Are there any scholarships or prizes I can apply for?

Many of our Georgia students are on the Hope Scholarship.  GCSU students are also eligible to apply for alumni scholarships, which can be worth several hundred to several thousand dollars.  For complete information, please visit the GCSU Financial Aid Office.  In addition, creative writing students can compete for prizes within the department, including the $50 Academy of American Poets University Prize (endowed by best-selling author and Georgia native Frances Mayes, in honor of her mother Frankye David Mayes) and two $100 Creative Writing Program prizes awarded in the spring to our most outstanding students.

What about loans?

See the Financial Aid Office about applying for student loans and other related information.

What about summers?

Few if any creative writing courses are offered in the summer.  However, some students participate in the Maymester Arts & Letters workshops, and some study abroad programs include writing-intensive courses that can count toward your major.  Primarily, though, the program is designed for students and faculty to have time to write, travel, and pursue other experiences over the summer.

I’m accepted and now I need a place to stay.  What about housing?

GCSU requires new students to live on-campus.  Several new suite-style residence halls have just been built, and others are nearly finished.  For older students, GCSU also offers apartment-style living at Bobcat Village on West Campus.  All GCSU’s residence halls have local telephone, cable television, and high-speed internet.  Bobcat Village apartments also include full kitchens, washers and driers, and much more. For complete information, visit the website for University Housing.

If I have other questions, whom should I talk to?

You may always contact the coordinator, David Muschell, by phone, at 478-445-4018, or by e-mail, at david.muschell@gcsu.edu.
