Historic Milledgeville

Flannery O’Connor’s family farm, Andalusia, is now open to the public.  Milledgeville is one of Georgia’s most historic cities.

Milledgeville is in the heart of Georgia, only 90 miles from Atlanta and an easy drive to the beaches of Savannah and Brunswick or to the North Georgia mountains.  Milledgeville was the state capital from 1803 to 1868 and is the site of the Old State Capitol, newly restored, and the Old Governor’s Mansion, which has long been part of the GCSU campus.  The historic downtown district features shops, restaurants, and taverns that are just two blocks from the campus.  Our weather is semi-tropical, with warm winters and “zero” annual snowfall.  Our community offers places where writers can have a cup of coffee, meet friends, and relax.  Downtown taverns, restaurants, coffee shops, and stores offer a blend of small town and university town living that is ideal for serious writers.  Who knows, you might recognize a place or a character from one of Flannery O’Connor’s short stories.

Downtown Milledgeville is a short walk from campus and features several taverns and restaurants.

Many downtown homes date back to the 19th century.

Milledgeville’s historic charm balances with GCSU’s recent and rapid growth, including new residential halls, a new 20 million dollar library, and more.
