Workshop 2004 faculty Martin Lammon, Ruth  Knafo Setton and Karen Sayler McElmurray join participants at a downtown tavern after hours.

Brad Barkley, shown here giving a reading at last year’s gathering, returns to our 2005 workshop. His first novel, Money, Love (Norton), was a Barnes and Noble “Discover Great New Writers” selection and a Best First Novel of 2000 as chosen by the Washington Post and Library Journal.

Travel Plans

You should plan to bring bedding and towels (if you are flying, let us know if bringing these items poses problems and we’ll try to make special arrangements). Otherwise, just bring those personal items that you need. The weather here is warm, so you may wish to bring lighter clothing and even a bathing suit if you like to swim.

You may bring your own computer, or you may use a computer lab on campus (PC compatible disks are preferable, although we can also accommodate Mac users).

If you are flying to Atlanta, the airport is about 90 miles from Milledgeville, so you will need to arrange for transportation.

If enough participants are flying into Atlanta who wish to pay for a round-trip shuttle, we will work with those people to arrange a shuttle pick-up on Sunday and Friday. The round-trip fee for such a shuttle would be about $80-$100 per person.

Why Arts & Letters?

For six years now, writers participating in our workshops have enjoyed working with teachers who are both talented and accessible.  We keep our workshops small (no more than 12 students, and fewer) in order to create a community of writers, a place where both students and faculty interact.  Teachers meet one-on-one with their students, attend student readings, and often just sit down over a cup of coffee to talk about writing and the writing life.  While we can’t offer any guarantees, several of our students have later published their work in Arts & Letters, as well as other prominent literary journals, and some are now publishing their first books.  What we can guarantee: We will take you and your work seriously here, and treat you with respect and collegiality.

New Tuition Fees and Fellowships

We’ve significantly reduced our tuition fee (now only $450 for the week), recognizing that budgets for travel and workshops are tight for everyone.  To help even further, we’ve created “Editor’s Fellowships” of $100, further reducing tuition to $350 for those participants recognized with fellowships.  Housing at GC&SU costs only $120 for the week

The Workshops: May 15-20, 2004

We offer workshops in poetry, fiction (for both short story writers and novelists), and creative nonfiction & memoir.  In addition to their regular class workshop, participants will meet individually with their instructor and with other writers/editors.  The workshops also feature special faculty and student readings, a visit to Flannery O’Connor’s family farm Andalusia, and special classes on poetry & memoir and publishing.

Fiction Workshop: Brad Barkely
