Travel Plans

The Antebellum Inn will provide for most of your needs so you should bring only personal items you may need.  If you need to use a computer, we will arrange for access to computers at GC&SU’s campus (just one block from the Inn).  If you are flying to Atlanta, the airport is about 90 miles from Milledgeville, so you will need to arrange for transportation.  If you are selected for the workshops and need help making your travel plans, we will do all we can to assist you.

Milledgeville was Georgia’s Capital from 1803 to 1868.  The Old Governor’s Mansion is here (currently under renovation) and many other historic places.

Why Poetry & Memoir?

Many contemporary poets have lately been drawn to creative nonfiction and memoir.  Why?  Perhaps these two genres both seek to tell the truth, to express the world we live in rather than imaginary worlds?  Whatever your reason may be, this intensive three-day workshop will provide you an opportunity to explore this new and exciting genre.

The Workshop: May 12-15

This “master class” workshop will be limited in size (5-6 writers), due to restricted space at the Inn, but also due to the intimate quality of the workshop.  Participants will arrive at the Antebellum Inn on Thursday afternoon.  Thursday evening the group will meet to discuss each writer’s goals, plans for the workshop, then meet for dinner at a downtown restaurant (an easy four block walk from the Inn).  After a delicious home-cooked breakfast, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday mornings will be devoted to writing workshops (see application procedures below).  Friday and Saturday afternoons will be time to write, explore Milledgeville, visit Flannery O’Connor’s family farm Andalusia, and meet for conferences with the instructor, Martin Lammon.  Evenings will be devoted to readings at the Inn by workshop participants.

Application Procedures

Poets should submit with their non-refundable application fee ($35, which includes a subscription to Arts & Letters, a $15 value), a sample of their poetry (up to 8 PAGES, either in manuscript or photocopies of published poems), a short (500-word) statement of why they are interested in working in creative nonfiction, and a cover letter with brief bio.  Checks or money orders should be payable to “GC&SU” (note “Editor’s Workshop” in the memo section of your check).  Please print the application form and submit with your application fee and other materials.  Please note if you prefer the smaller Twin Room (bathroom is down the hall but private) for a reduction in the workshop fee or if you prefer a full-size room at the regular workshop fee rate.  NOTE: Room preferences will be considered on a “first applied, first accepted” basis.  We cannot guarantee room choices.  Send application fee and all materials to:

Arts & Letters Editor’s Workshop

Individuals accepted for the workshops will each receive a $100 Editor’s Fellowship, reducing fees from $650 to $550 (for the “Twin Room,” a reduction from $550 to $450).  Two people willing to share the Twin Room may submit their materials together but each must include the $35 non-refundable fee.  If both partners are accepted to the workshop, they may share the “Twin Room” at a reduced cost of $375 per person ($475 regular fee less $100 Editor’s Fellowship).
